Are you an emerging professional in the medical profession looking forward to career advancement? Perhaps you are a RN seeking the BSN or you are a BSN tired of shift work and looking to move into a leadership role. Consider what competencies and degrees you need to be a VP of Hospice, Area Director, Regional Administrator, Executive Director, Director of Operations, Branch Manager, or even Administrator with Hospice organizations.

Build competencies to advance your compassionate care career

A Vice President of Hospice position requiring 10 years of experience will require more than the RN license, a certified hospice and palliative nurse (CHPN) certification or the BSN. Qualified candidates need multiple years of supervisory experience in hospice and a thorough and excellent understanding of state and federal regulations, among other skills. You will need a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in nursing, public health, health administration, or health related fields AND almost all senior-level positions require or prefer a Master’s Degree.

If the idea of moving up or developing your competencies in compliance, financials and budgeting, risk management and human resource management appeals to you, there are several different degree options you can consider.

What Master’s Degree do employers value?

While most positions do not require a specific master’s degree, they certainly do prefer that you earn the degree. So, how do you determine which degree is best. We recommend exploring the courses that you will take to make sure they cover your new and expanded areas of responsibility.

Degree options available on the market include a wide variety of live, online and hybrid programs. Many of the programs available today are geared to the working professional, allowing you to continue working full-time while going to school. They range from a Master of Public Health, Master of Jurisprudence or Juris Master in Healthcare Compliance, Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Health Care Administration, the Master of Public Administration with a Health Administration focus, or even the Master of Science in Healthcare.

Dig deep and reflect

Are you the subject matter expert related to all hospice compliance requirements? Do you enjoy developing, reviewing and implementing policy, procedure and practice guidelines to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements? Do you find yourself with a growing interest in working with budgets, reviewing contracts, explaining health care programs and benefits, and managing staff?

Consider online Master's Degree programs

The online Master of Jurisprudence (M.J. for short) in Healthcare Compliance at Stetson University College of Law may be an ideal option among the many programs in the education marketplace. In the M.J. program you will learn to assess and manage risk, analyze and solve compliance challenges, and effectively communicate legal issues.

The M.J. curriculum will expose you to contract law, ethics and professionalism, legal writing and research, risk management, fraud and abuse, and more. From technology in healthcare compliance to HIPAA, you will be exposed to subjects that are immediately applicable to your job. Few other programs have such a strong emphasis on law as it relates to healthcare administration.

Build essential skills and make your move

You already know that hospice patients deserve compassionate care. You know what it takes to meet their physical, social, and emotional needs.  A Master’s degree is the next step in your professional journey. Develop the skills to ensure that the business of hospice care is managed ethically and professionally, as well.

If you want to build essential skills necessary for executive leadership in hospice organizations, it is time to take the leap and explore the myriad of degree offerings, such as the Master of Jurisprudence in Healthcare Compliance at Stetson University College of Law.
