How Working Professionals Earn Law Degrees Without Leaving Their Jobs

10:40

You’ve already decided a law degree is worth it. What you’re not sure about is whether you can earn one without walking away from the job, the salary, and the life you’ve built.

You can. [Stetson’s ABA-accredited part-time Flex JD program](https://www.stetson.edu/law/academics/flex-jd-program.php) is designed for exactly this, and it lets working professionals across the Tampa Bay region attend law school while working full time.

A law degree opens real doors. It can move you into the legal profession from another career, or add weight in a field where legal training already helps, like compliance or public policy. The obstacles that stop most working professionals from going after it are logistical, not academic. Every one of them has a concrete answer, and this post will walk you through them.

## Part-Time Law School Is the ABA's Answer for People With Day Jobs

Part-time law school isn’t a workaround or a watered-down version of the degree. Part-time programs have existed for decades so that people with full-time jobs and family commitments can earn the same Juris Doctor as everyone else.

There’s an old myth about working during law school that’s worth clearing up. For years, the American Bar Association (ABA) capped how much full-time law students could work, limiting them to 20 hours a week of outside employment. That cap was aimed at full-time students who wanted to add a part-time job on the side (and, for what it’s worth, the ABA [eliminated the rule (Standard 304(f))](https://www.americanbar.org/groups/legal_education/accreditation/faqs/) in 2014).

As a part-time law student, you would be in a different situation. Part-time students carry a lighter course load each semester, which is what keeps a full-time career possible while you study.

Plan for the first year of law school to be the heaviest. The reading and thinking loads are significant, and incorporating your new studies into your daily schedule is an adjustment that takes discipline. But your early coursework sets the foundation for the rest of your legal education, and once you’ve gotten through that first semester, you’ll realize that completing your JD part-time over the next few years is do-able.

## Your Weekly Schedule Runs on Evenings and Online Classes

Stetson Law's part-time program is called the [Flex JD](https://www.stetson.edu/law/academics/flex-jd-program.php) (formerly the Part-Time JD). It’s run through in-person evening classes at the Tampa Law Center and on our Gulfport campus, combined with synchronous and asynchronous online coursework.

You complete [88 credit hours to graduate](https://www.stetson.edu/law/academics/flex-jd-program.php), up to 44 of them online, and most students finish in about four years including some summer sessions. The program begins in August with an orientation designed specifically for Flex JD students.

After your first two years, the schedule opens up. You can pull courses from morning, afternoon, weekend, or evening offerings to fit your work calendar. Once you’ve completed 28 credit hours and met the academic criteria, you can even apply to accelerate by [switching to full-time status](https://www.stetson.edu/law/academics/flex-jd-program.php).

None of this dilutes the degree. Flex JD students meet the same admission and graduation standards as full-time students and learn from the same faculty. Our professors especially enjoy working with Flex JD students who come to law school later in their careers because they bring an added level of real-world experience and professional judgment that informs how they approach their studies.

## If You’re Evaluating Part-Time Programs, Checking for ABA Accreditation Is Essential

If you’re researching part-time programs with online components, you’ll likely run into ads for fully online law schools promising a degree you can attain entirely from home. Before you enroll anywhere, though, check whether the school is accredited by the American Bar Association. In most states, you can’t sit for the [bar exam](https://www.americanbar.org/groups/legal_education/accreditation/faqs/) unless your law degree comes from an ABA-accredited school. An unaccredited online JD can leave you unable to get licensed, no matter what you paid for it.

Stetson Law’s Flex JD gives you online flexibility without that risk. It’s a hybrid program inside an ABA-accredited law school, not a standalone online degree.

One caveat if you plan to practice outside Florida. New York places a 15-hour limit on the number of online credit hours graduates can have in order to be eligible for the New York State bar exam. Check the requirements for the jurisdiction where you’re planning to practice before you apply for any hybrid program in order to be certain. You can find details for each jurisdiction in the National Conference of Bar Examiners' [Comprehensive Guide to Bar Admission Requirements](https://www.ncbex.org/news-resources/2025-year-review-and-2026-comprehensive-guide-bar-admission-requirements-published).

## Your Work Experience Gives You an Edge in Law School

Younger students typically have no or little work experience to draw on when they start law school. As a part-time student, you show up with the opposite. Years of professional judgment, client experience, and the discipline to juggle competing demands are exactly what admissions committees and employers value. At Stetson, [nearly one in four Flex JD students](https://www.stetson.edu/law/academics/flex-jd-program.php) already holds a master's or doctoral degree.

A law degree also builds on the career you already have. You might move fully into the legal profession, or you might apply legal studies inside your current field and become the person who actually understands the contracts and the regulations.

Part-time law students can also take on roles that turn coursework into real experience. We work with Flex JD students to help them find experiential learning and co-curricular opportunities that fit around their work schedules whenever possible.

## You Can Earn a JD in Tampa Bay Without Moving or Quitting

If you already live in Tampa, St. Petersburg, or anywhere in central Florida within commuting distance, you have an advantage most law students would envy. You can earn your degree at our Gulfport campus and the Tampa Law Center without relocating and without leaving your employer. Not every law school offers part-time programs, and [Stetson’s is highly rated](https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-law-schools/part-time-law-rankings).

A typical week means heading to campus in the evening after work for in-person classes, with online coursework filling in around your schedule. The campuses are built for that rhythm. The Gulfport library is [open 24/7](https://lawadmissions.law.stetson.edu/part-time-law-school) with your student access card, and the Tampa Law Center library runs from early morning to midnight.

Talk to your employer early. Some working professionals arrange a flex day or two during heavy semesters, tap employer tuition assistance, or schedule work travel around exams. A supportive manager makes a real difference, and many are glad to invest in an employee earning a law degree.

## Paying for a Part-Time JD While You Keep Earning

The financial math looks different when you keep working. You hold onto your income instead of giving it up for three years, you spread law school tuition across more years of study, and you cover living expenses the same way you do now.

Part-time students remain eligible for financial aid, and employer tuition assistance can offset a meaningful share of the cost. One thing to check directly with admissions: some institutional awards are structured for full-time enrollment, so ask how part-time status affects any scholarship you’re counting on.

Strong academic and LSAT numbers still earn merit-based aid as a part-time applicant. For the full picture on cost and scholarships, see our breakdown of[how much law school costs](https://lawblog.law.stetson.edu/how-much-does-law-school-cost-in-2025) and how to plan for it.

## The Workload Is Real, and Thousands Have Managed It

This is demanding, and it helps to hear that plainly. You will protect study time on evenings and weekends, and you will need to watch for burnout the way you would in any high-pressure stretch. Good time management is the difference between a hard four years and an unsustainable one.

Thousands of working professionals have done exactly this. For the tactical playbook on scheduling, family, and staying sane through it, read our guide to [surviving part-time law school](https://lawblog.law.stetson.edu/how-to-survive-part-time-law-school).

You will not do it alone, either. Stetson has a student organization specifically for [part-time students](https://lawadmissions.law.stetson.edu/part-time-law-school) and an Academic Success Program built to support people carrying outside responsibilities.

## Take the First Step Toward Earning Your Part-Time JD

Review the [Flex JD program details](https://www.stetson.edu/law/academics/flex-jd-program.php) to see the format and weigh the timeline against your own calendar, then start a conversation with admissions about your law school applications. You can do this from where you already live and work in Tampa Bay. Classes start in August, so give yourself a runway to prepare your application and, if you haven’t done it yet, take the LSAT.
